Recovering Damaged Garageband Song Files
Garageband, when it works is a really nice tool to use for music composition or arrangement. A number of my users use it extensively to record audio for radio or blog and last year I worked with:
To find a solution to their damaged Garageband issues.
At the time I created a fixer for the 8-bit error that was plaguing Garageband users, but with the recent releases of Garageband things have gotten a whole lot more complicated. In the old days Garageband store audio files and effects as compressed 4mv files which could be in identified, tested and fixed by the fixed1t 8-bit fixer. But now most of the files are straight aiff files, and the tasks of finding the defective files has become a lot more difficult to detect and test.
Of course there is the manual method, find the files and hand test each file till the defective one is found, but thats slow and tedious. Whilst investigating a recent spate of errors from users, I realised and a simple data lister software I created to aid me when writing my original:
This is an absolute must for displaying the user audio files within Garageband.
Here is a video showing me using it when working with the Roland MC-808.
By giving me a list of the files and all their properties in a drop down list, I can quickly spot any that are defective as I'll show in the next blog entry.
My data lister has therefore become an extremely valuable and simple tool in the search for damaged Garageband files. Once found the damaged file can be eradicated or repaired or re-recorded. This has saved my users much heartache by resurrecting their defective Garageband Songs.

The fixed1t 'Shout' is between 4 - 9 minutes but the entire program is really great and well worth a listen as Tyler Smith, David Bax and special guest Actor Pat Healy get into some really interesting ;-) discussions. Be aware there is adult humour and content.

fixed1t Audio File Recovery Service
All of us are using more and more digital audio recorders to record music, conversations, conferences, podcasts to name but a few.
We've also transferred our treasured analogue tape to digital format.
We've also transferred our treasured analogue tape to digital format.
In the old days of tape machines, if there was a problem with a part of the recording you could literally cut it out and glue the bits back together so only the damaged section was lost.
But as an increasing number of people are discovering, if there is digital damage or processing damaged to a digital file, then it effects not only the few seconds, but possibly the entire file can corrupted making it unusable and the recording can be lost.
For those of you using Garageband who have discovered that Garageband randomly corrupts your recording on the Mac such that the iPad, Iphone or iPod touch won't open it, I created the 8-bit fixer:
However, since creating the 8-bit fixer I have been contacted by an increasing number of Mac and PC users who have stumble into the digital audio quagmire at crucial times in their projects and scheduling and I've provided help. So I decided to create a new blog to advertise this service.
For those of you with damage beyond the scope of the 8-bit fixer, fixed1t has the tools, knowledge and experience to recover that which can be saved and if it can't be fixed then if agreed up front, I won't charge.
For those of you who have made and important recording and discovered that the background noise or tape noise make it almost incomprehensible or too quiet to listen too, help is at hand I can clean up and make the files more comprehensible.
For small jobs, I operate a 'Donate What You Feel Is Reasonable' scheme, when the file is recovered. It's simple, you decide how valuable the service has been and how much time, effort and angst you would have gone through trying to recover the file, and make a simple donation or multiple small donations if you'd like.
In doing this I put trust in you.
If the job is larger I will happily look at the file(s) an give you an estimate of the work required and the costs.
So if you have a damaged digital audio file that refuses to open, or a digital recording of an old tape you would like enhancing then email:
